Look around you and be distressed.
Look within you and be depressed,
Look to Jesus and be at rest.
J.C. Penney was well advanced in years before he committed his life fully to Jesus Christ. A good honest man, he was primarily interested in his early years in becoming a success and making money. As a clerk working for six dollars a week at Joslin's Dry Goods Store in Denver, he had an ambition to one day be worth one hundred thousand dollars. When he reached that goal he felt temporary satisfaction, but soon set his sights on being worth a millon dollars.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Penney worked hard to expand their business, but one day Mrs. Penney caught cold and developed pneumoni, which subsequently caused her death. "When she dies, "J. C. recalled, "my world crashed about me. To build a business, to make a success in the eyes of men, to accumulate money-what was the purpose of life?.....I felt mocked by life, even by God Himself." Before long, Penney was ruined financially and in deep distress. It was at the point that he turned to God and experienced a true spiritual conversion. He said, "When I was brought to humility and the knowledge of dependence on God, sincerely and earnestly seeking God's aid, it was forthcoming, and light illumined my being. I cannot otherwise describe it than to say that it changed me as a man".
Jesus gives meaning and purpose to life. He brings calm to the storm. He brings rest to the soul.
Looking unto Jesus the author and
finisher of our faith.
