Christ has already paid the price that needed to be exacted for our sins. He took the whips, the lashes, the nailing to the cross, the verbal rebukes, and also the physical agony on our behalf. The God of this universe looked upon our futility and became a man, and then He sacrified His life so that we who did not and could not ever deserve His mercy might obtain it. Jesus Christ did all this because He is both just and kind.
Isaiah prophesied the promise of Christ's cross. "Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried....But He was pierced through our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed" (Isaiah 53:4-5)
Though I expend every effort, I can never rid myself of sin. You've already provided the only way in which I can be cleansed.
